Comic Con Comes to Portsmouth

This weekend (5th and 6th May 2018) Comic Con will be coming to Portsmouth and for the first time the event will be held in the Portsmouth Guildhall.

Here's a snippet from the organising team.

"Some of the industry’s greatest international artists and writers will be in attendance. Their work has influenced some of the biggest box office draws like X-Men, Black Panther, Thor, Avengers, Batman, Superman, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Hellboy, Kingsman and manymore. The show also features the talent who have shaped the likes of Game of Thrones,Ready Player One and The Grand Budapest Hotel. There’ll be opportunities to hear them speak, get their autographs and take a behind the scenes look at the way they work."

Given the timing (just after the release of Avengers: Infinity War) and the amount of recent comic book inspired movies, I think there will be a lot of people attending their first Comic Con event this weekend. Heck, I will be too!

I have seen many images, videos and movies that touch on the fun, excitement, experience and community I think you get from attending Comic Con event. I particularly like Space Quest and Paul for these scenes.

I was close to attending my first Comic Con last year, but unfortunately I didn't make it. So I'm super excited for this event. In fact, I may even be attempting a bit of cosplay myself. I say 'a bit' because I'm not sure that I'll look anything like the character I will be dressed as. But hey, its all about having fun, so why not.

I really want to get some cool photos of people that are doing the cosplay 'properly'. Theres something very cool about a bit of role play. There is a cosplay competition, if your up for thew challenge, but you need to get your entries in ASAP as there are limited spaces (https://portsmouthcomiccon.com/cosplay/).

I am hoping to make my pal Bex jellious by meeting local cosplayer Leanne / Onyxeia, who is from nearby Chichester. Part of this event, for me, is finding out about and meeting some of the amazing artists, performers, activities that are local to Portsmouth and the surrounding areas like Havant, Chichester and Fareham.

I have seen there are a few artists, storytellers and creators I'd really like to just sit with for a brief chat and hear more about what and how they do what they do, so I'd recommend you check the line up and scheduled guests at portsmouthcomiccon.com.

Two teams I really want to see are the DICE Team and the VR Team from University of Portsmouth.

I believe the DICE Team have run a couple of events in Southsea at local cafes over the last year. A friend (Paul) has spoken very highly of these events and while I have unfortunately not been able to meet them before, I am very much looking forward to playing new and old games with them and everyone else. Make sure you check them out.

The VR Team, well, come on, its VR! I'm damm interested. I am yet to be 'fully immersed' in VR, but I have been very impressed at local events were I have been able to try systems out.

"In the Virtual Reality Zone, you can discover VR, motion capture, screenings, gamedemonstrations, robots and more as the University of Portsmouth showcases state-of- the-arttechnology and emerging student talent."

If you want to see some awesome comic art, cosplay, street art, live FX demonstration, games workshops, virtual reality, or hear international artists and writers speak about their experiences, then you simply must be at Portsmouth Comic Con this bank holiday weekend (5th and 6th May).

There are a range of cool and interesting panels you can sit in on too. I'd definitely recommend checking the website for the line up before the day so you have an idea what you want to see, and hopefully so you didn't miss anything.

If that hasn't sold you, I'll be there in cosplay (probably).

Tickets are currently still available for the event, but I'd get them as soon as you can as this will be a very popular event. Standard tickets at £16 and a student ticket at £10, the event is reasonably priced. Which is just as well, because I can see I might end up spending a bit of money on memorabilia, games and art work. I'll try to be good, hehe.
